Metaphor Examples In Poems
Examples of metaphor poems compare two seemingly unrelated things and illustrate the similarities between them. If we compare a snowflake with human worries, we could say, Don’t flurry about life so much. Your grass will be seen when the southerly winds arrive.
Oftentimes metaphors are handy when writing a poem. Each of these fairly short metaphor poems has a brief description to host the poem.
Note: Some poems here are events that maybe did not occur somewhere in the world. Some of them are stories I wrote with people in mind.
Kindness is as
Kindness
Kindness is as fire
shared from between spirits
Kindness is as water
Finding a way, seen through
To extinguish dismay.
Kindness is as wind
That guides the largest sail
Invincible to day and night
Larger than the largest whale.
Kindness is as earth
A meek rock in a streaming river
Unrecognized by men who only shiver
Or the men who hold their tokens high
Only starring at the worth.
Yet the man who saw beyond the mirror
The place where waters glow
The meek rock lies and doesn’t expire
Chiseling at it, he found pure gold
Against the wind
Betraying a fire
Walking backwards from the water
He shared it with one he doesn’t know.
Rabbi Bergstein taught me how the smallest details are very important.
Hope
A man sucked on a lollipop
With the word “Hope” on the wrapper
The interviewer invited him in
“May I finish my sucker?
Yes, if that makes you happier.”
The employer saw the word “Hope”
Inscribed upon the wrapper.
Smiling he made a mental note.
As qualified as the others
He just seems a bit happier.
Their interview was concluding
The man threw away his sucker stick
The employer said, “Your hired.”
Hold on to that wrapper
Enjoy “Hope” lick by lick."
A relationship between two people is as
The River
The river was calm at first
As their paddles struck water
For some time their feet banged with thirst
Wanting to know each other
Starting their flow in the river.
As they continued going
The rivers force grew stronger
Complexion mixed with flowing
While they both spoke longer
Going along with the river.
River rapids the two reached
And their warmth touched each other
Warmth that no teacher could teach
Untouched by the boats hover
Holding onto one another.
Once more the river was calm
And the water sparkled in spots
They realized the boat was gone
And as they looked down to plot
They saw that they had each other.
This poem is about a person who was like a candle when I met them fifty percent of the way.
A Candle Lost in darkness of that day I saw a distant candle Being that I saw a way I requested the ladies handle. I must have toiled half the way To connect from such a length Upon extending her my say The lady bent over with sheer strength. My wick absorbed her purity I no longer realized that dark When asked for my seniority I just showed this glaring spark.
Noticing other people and what they do for us brings light to our world.
Frozen Pond
A certain man was as a frozen pond
Greeting townsman with a bitter "hi"
Frowning as the folks walked by
And there was this certain bond
And they didn’t know how to respond.
One day a woman came
And smiled to the man like blue sky
But in stillness, a cold, cracking "Aye"
Things were the same
And the ground was his aim.
A woman one time lost her purse
And the man left it at her door
She found it on a smiling floor
Not knowing who to reimburse
She slept relieved and went her course.
Another day the man was bitter
Now a woman walked with force
With flowery lipstick to enforce
Amongst the town in its chitter
With birds and vines to meet the glitter.
And than they met, with friction
A 21 foot deep impression
Ice serious in his expression
Softly, she said, “A man made my day.
He brought my purse, do you know his way?"
Than, as sun he saw her smile
His ice just couldn’t hold its place
A tear flowed from his face
Soft, she said, “A man made my day.”
Smiling in tears, he said,
“I am that man, And, you made my day.”
World Peace begins with our world.
World Peace Poem
I see you as my brother
Regardless who you are
Even if painted as sky blue
You have different sparks as a star
I accept you from close to far.
Oh how our ways are diverse
On eastern sands you eat goat and lamb
On western floors its meat, bread, and jam
Whether named Shalom, Salaam, or Sam
You say Kharouf we say lamb.
I see the man with a Taqiyah
Notice the quarter his sibling dropped
His brother wore a Yamikkah
The metal turned as lands flopped
Gave it to him, smiled, and Shalom, joyously hopped.
Space
In a place of emptiness
As darkness filling a room
The thought of a man
Giving a woman a rose
Causes the garden to bloom.
The thought of a ferocious wind
On that calm day
Is as a door that opens
To the bride and grooms shower
Where one fills space with a rare “hurray”

Here are metaphors about life.
Life is a tree
With branches in several directions
Growing leaves, flowers, or fruits
Picked and swallowed with reflections
For further changes, for further corrections.
Life is a forest
Filled with scattered breezes
And delightful smell
Its branches are connected well
Many flowers have their leafy shell.
Life is a hike
Paths filled with roses and thorns
Cramped in sharp places
To make wise turns
Focusing on the roses and ferns.
Life is frozen water
A river attached to a pond
The surface paved with stillness
Looking beneath and beyond
Steady movement fills the bond.
This poem is about a roller coaster me and my middle school teacher Mrs. Becktold of blessed memory rode on in Cedar Point. Mrs Becktold took me to Cedar Point and we had fun together there.
Life is as a
Roller Coaster Ride
At first the ride was slow
Moving sluggishly upward
As I impatiently waited
For that exciting moment
When things start going downward.
Then we approached the line
And the suspense filled our lungs
While a ticking noise was felt
I saw myself on the top
And the bells in my heart rung.
The roller coaster dived down
The minutes turned to seconds
Our surroundings became still
Into a large illusion
Released of all our senses.
In this accelerating tunnel
Of no measuring motion
I wished to move much slower
But time would not allow this
I learned to see my position.
We have those times in life where we go through "A path of thorns" (Proverbs). This path of thorns can lead to a smooth path.
Life’s Mud
So I came to that point of thick mud
Looking down I just nodded
My ankles drenched in frowns
Shadows had to flood
One flower did bud.
A beauty my eyes didn’t recognize
Unfamiliar with its form
Standing still in the air
I began to realize
A chilled breeze in disguise.
When the bird sang that song
Couldn’t help but polish my cheeks
You’re a natural you know
I choose to clap along
This ball blossoms like ping pong.
Where’s the mud I once saw?
This is strange
A black gem in my hand
Wheres the law
Against churning up raw flaw.
In this next metaphor poetry we compare a human being to a tree. There are several figurative aspects relating a tree to a human being.
A Tree
He is as a tree deeply rooted
Within these years of soil
His trunk is muted
From harsh wind and toil.
These leaves of beauty dangle
Composing a green sea
Every tree has an angle
To share a memory.
Tree Grips
Two trees grew close by each other
One in a pond
Another in a forest
Branching side by side, as brother to brother
Arching above us tourists.
From different soils they branched out
Side by side in the wind
Swinging in bitter and sweet song
As brothers searching for a route
Side by side in the wind.
In the ponds wrinkling reflection
Birds flying in circling song
Branches reaching hard from dusk to dawn
In the ponds wrinkling reflection
Over a thin piece of lawn.
In space the two reached hard and wide
Swaying from larger and smaller heights
As brothers reaching hard toward each other
From wet and dry places with forward stride
As people grasping in higher heights.
In this next poem using metaphors we compare a butterfly to a person.
As A Butterfly She began her struggle
Grasping edges leaf to leaf And her inner buckle Strapped her in from any grief. This persistent endurance Began awakening a spark The lady started seeing hints Even in the darkest dark. One day, an event occurred Causing a balance loss Being that she had conquered A cocoon formed from the toss. She emerged and flew away To another point When reviewing that past day She appreciated her standpoint.
In this metaphor poetry we see the power of words.
Farming Words A man was given a bucket of seeds To plant within His field Each one to echo his deed So his purpose be fulfilled. Being that he had many Not knowing where to start Before the area was rainy He proceeded with his part. “So many seeds” He thought “Perhaps I shall drench the land” He then poured wherever he sought Dancing amidst the sand. The crop turned very ail Until the Farmer returned He was given another pail The planted weeds were scorned. This time the man saw Planting his seeds with care From his observance of the law The cropper enjoyed his share.
Baseball Words
He heard a ball bounce off these walls
Bearing a spectrum of light
The motion has a voice that calls
Just passed his way in delight
Tossed from a gentle height.
“Where shall this ball be passed?”
Those eyes searching for a place
Legs treading, walking fast
A request uttered from home base
“So let us fill that empty space. “
The spokesman ready with mitt in hand
Reserved in his stance
The object tossed, the outcome vast, AND
Crowds cheer from Greenland to France
From that motion came much romance!
This ball was placed in the pitchers mitt
The batter nervous but in good mind
“Am I ready to make it”
A doubtful curb the pitcher designed
A grand slam trophy as we rewind!
Has there been a time where you walked out with Mrs. Night and just wanted to hold her hand?
Walking With Night
She was alone as day went to work
The owls hoood on certain branches
Crickets chirped along the road
As night grew lonely in her dark abode
I caressed her thistles with a hand jerk.
Oh how quiet are her shady quarters
Gentle breezes to sooth her dress
A palace awaits the guest that seizes
The golden field that greets her breezes
Millions of waving tree supporters.
Than it came time to leave her chamber
The encounter was celestial
As that woman, Stars filled her sky
Sometimes harder to say bye
Her lipstick though can leave a cold burrr.
Riding away from lady night
I hope those stars made her smile
The caresses we had in lonely places
She has this twinkle that fills the spaces
Riding away from miss lady night
And her celestial delight.
Sometimes I don't like Mr. Winter but I know he means well and what results from his angry breath is warm.
The Warmth Of Winter
Winter harshly spoke his word
With a cold echoing tongue
His face bitter and awkward
As if he held a sword
From a distance the trees rung.
Charging toward me my skin was cold
Smiling from afar
Gripping me, his hands unfold
A gentle pat and I was told
A story from a star.
Dressed in a plain brown suit
With stripes of white, colorful mix
He spoke of his ladies sun suit
A change to bring Summer her fruit
Sown in grey fabrics.
So cold is the surface layer
In clashing breaths his tone
But when daughter Springs presence was known
Sent by Summer on her slayer
Ice tears melted in the conveyer
As they journeyed to the unknown.
We should see the positive more.
Frosted Slush
I saw this slush coated with mud
Thoughts of grey dimmer hours
As the snowflakes began to flood
The frosted slush began to bud
Like whitish looking flowers.
Looking closer at the flake
A crystallized gem
I can admit my mistake
Seeing the inner snowflake
Smelling winter without the cake.

How To Write A Metaphor Poem
A metaphor by definition is two unrelated things that are being compared to each other by connecting the similarities. I can give you examples of poems but that by itself won’t yield you a solid understanding. In the coming exercise I’ll briefly teach you how to write a good metaphor poem. For example, we can compare nature with a woman. We can say about nature, "your wind when we go hiking with you is a relieving back massage on this hot sunny day.
1. Get out a piece of paper and a pencil.
2. Seek the mass in your vicinity that your eyes see first.
3. Compare it to another element.
4. Alright, at this particular moment I’m in a room looking at a bookshelf. Several books are on it with many drawers. What is in these drawers?
Ok, now that we have information, how can we compose a poem containing metaphors about the book shelf? What about the shelf relates to something else?
The Book Shelf
There is this one shelf I pass
Who always bares his load
So much knowledge to amass
And learn from his every code.
Every time I learn his drawers
Another lesson is revealed
Within his life I saw new doors
That were once concealed.

When composing a metaphor poem you should strive to create a generally meaningfully deep portrait. Poetry doesn’t require rhyming. The rhyme does spice the verse up, however.
One thing to avoid when writing a poem is force rhyming. You should always be in control. In order to avoid force rhyming, or rhyming just to rhyme consider the flow of the poem and let ideas flow naturally to you. Also, have in mind what you are writing about and find words that fit in those places.
Thought is likened to being in a dark basement with a candle. As long as you see your candle is lit, other candles are found. Once you have reached those candles words on paper begin to blossom.
Extended Metaphor
An extended metaphor is a metaphor that continues throughout the literature that follows. When writing a metaphor that I want to be continuous throughout my piece, I start with something like this. Example: "The river is a relationship, starting slow it began, and as our waters sped up, the rocks we encountered we surpassed again, to a joyous waterfall." When we write an extended metaphor our objective is to continue with the metaphor through the whole piece. Here's an example.
Hope
Standing amidst piles of snow
Stretching miles in front of me
Seemingly no where to go
Looking, looking, steps echo
Looking for a place to be.
Then, recalling southern tea
The snow began to glow
Hope is a blade in the sea
A grass blade warm as tea
Wavering in this snow.
Regardless of the depths that be
Wavering throughout rough wind
The color has this guarantee
This spree of dancing joyously
To reach that dividend.
The blade leans toward a prairie
Stretching miles in front of me
Standing tall, sweet as a cherry
Growing on a nearby tree
With fields of flowers and southern tea.
We meet our friends in random places after parting ways in school.
Lets meet again
Our journey is a river
We had our steady flows
Our rocky shiver
The hallway echoes
Where the water goes.
We should meet in the sea
Regardless where you are
There lies a rock where we agree
That rock we share from close to far
We overcame that jagged bar.
Lets meet again where rivers cross
Utencils in hand to note the blast
Together we will get across
To splash those edges in contrast
Like steady streaming from the past.
Our teachers are the as the gardeners of our lives who plant seeds of wisdom.
Student Teacher
In that seat where you sat
A spark will remain
You often wore your thinking hat
During class you failed to chat
Your example will sustain.
You taught your lessons well
As an eagle guides the birds
When questions rose you failed to yell
Diving for that answer bell
Rose your hand and grasped those words.
Thank you for the seeds you planted
Seeds of guidance with classmates
There is this song that will be chanted
And its echoes will be granted
Where another delegates.
Today's Happenings
"How are you"
A man passed me by far
Riding on his bike
He asked me “How are you?”
What does that mean ?
A man jogged passed me
Asked me "how are you?"
Kept going when I said , “good”
What does that mean?
What does that mean?
Do we know what we are saying when we talk?
When we talk do we know why we talk?
What does “how are you mean?”
When we speak do our words mean something?
Or are they just as a wind
A wind that hits us like closing a door.
What does “how are you mean”
And what should “How are you today mean”?
Vegetables- A statement of advice or correction that may taste bitter but be good for us.
Fruits- A statement of advice or compliment that is more pleasurable to swallow.
Note: If you see something here that you think can be improved please pass me a figurative vegetable. I like many vegetables and fruits.

Thank you for your comment Chriss3444. I appreciate your support.
How do u write a 4 line unfying metaphor
Great poems! Who is the poet?
u sucks this is not for u stop and get on with ur life
I agree adamgt07. Jimmy, your very mean. What did she ever do to you?! Kristen, I really like your poem. No matter what people say, just keep going.
Thank you for your comment c!r(s@y11 and your support. I am going to pass you a jalapeno pepper with cheese. I disagree with your statement. The gentleman who posted the comment may have been confused. Yes, the comment was mean but most of us have things we can work on in regards to this matter. Jimmy might be nice in some other ways if we got to know him.
wow what a poem i didn't get it sorry
Chloe, basically these poems can be viewed with depth and within that depth is sweetness. One of the ones that stands out for me is the one titled Reaping With A Second Chance and how words are seeds.
I like these poems. They are great! In my class they give us a homework called spelling sentences. Can you give me a list of metaphors I can include in my writing?
Thank you for your time and effort in making these poems and answering all these questions. It really helped me get a better understanding of an extended metaphor. =)
By the way, do you have any suggested topics about a metaphor that compares a person and something else?
I was reviewing your poems and they are extraordinary! I helped me alot! You don't happen to be interessted in a challenge, do you? I am in need of a poem on betrayal and the ones I have found have been dull and not very deep with very little poectic devices. I am asking for a short poem( by you or another author) that has a deep meaning and a good ammount of poetic devices, thank-you.
dEAr souduku orteggan or whatever yer name is, u rlly should get a life and not be so lazy. write ur own poems or something...SUCKA, you just got pwnd.
I appreciate your comment, Bob. My suggestion for comparing a person to something else is to compare oneself to a candle. A person is like a candle in the way that just as a candle shines light on the darkness and makes the darkness light when we help others whether it be picking up money for someone who dropped it on the floor or saying "have nice day" we bring light to that person's world.
I appreciate your fruit like comment Sadaku. I am happy to hear this. Please email more information about the details. Note: I do not know about topics such as betrayal. My email address is adamgt07@yahoo.com.
I would like it LAZboiSUCKA if you would treat other people with respect. And whatever your name is beneath the surface you probably have the work ethic to write your own poems. Find yourself and be happy with yourself. People are as rivers. If you see something within another it is something that should be improved within you.
How does personification differ from metaphor? In your examples, I'm a tree deeply rooted within these years of soil...seems like personification.
Life is a tree seems like a metaphor. Are both metaphors? Why?
I appreciate your comment here bionic woman. I think the difference between a metaphor and personification is a metaphor tends to go deeper.
Metaphor- I am as a frozen pond filled with water is a metaphor that causes me to think. How am I a frozen pond filled with water? Sometimes I "seem" to be depressed. In reality I am happy beneath the surface and I may be deep in thought when I look depressed.
Personification- The hands of my branches massage the ice beneath them. If I were to think about this and the imagery, I could plan on going to get a massage right now. How can we find the depth within this example. We realize what is happening and it doesn't go as deep as the metaphor.
So a metaphor is a camparison between two objects that are not the same? Your poems helped me understand that! From comparing a tree to a person! Thank-you! Oh, @ Sadaku Ortagan, The Eye of Toad by Adam Rulli Gibbs is a great poem that expresses betrayal ;), I have a project which asked me to find pomes with that theme. It had also asked me to write my own poems with "poetic devices" such as metaphors in which this site helped me! And now I am stumped on how poetic devices may enhance the meaning of poems...
I appreciate your comment TheNoteBook. Poetic devices enhance the meaning of poems in one way by adding spice to them. When a poem has a metaphor and rhymes, etc it gives the poem a flavor that adds beat and so forth.
Thank you so much, Adam. You have helped me once again!
The Note Book, I appreciate you helping me to let me help you.

Thank you My Mom, I am happy you like them.

I have to admit, you have really good poems. Thanks for helping me out with my homework. Dont worry, I made sure you got credit.
I appreciate your comment X. You have seen that my poems are "really good", and what you have seen within my poems, is as a mirroring lake that reflects the qualities that I think you see within yourself. Now go out there and write really good poetry.
Great and soulful poems. Thank you for the feelings that your poems evoked in me and Thank you for sharing your heart.
All the best to you.

Hey
I was wondering how I could relate something like PACMAN to something else. I'm currently stumped because I have no idea what to relate it to. Thanks in advance.
Thank you for your advice. However, I'm still a little bit confused on what you mean. Would you mind explaining a bit more?
Thank you for your time. I really appreciate it. I showed my extended metaphor poem to my teacher and she enjoyed it. Thank you very much.

Kristen :) 19 months ago
Here is my metaphoric poem:
The Typewriter
Going faster and faster
Ringing the bell.
Move along and
Keep the rhythm steady.
Hurry, hurry!
You’ve got to get to the end.
Be on time with it.
Whew, refuel and
Rest what makes it move.
Get the rhythm back.
Go, go!
Finally made it;
I’m on time.
Time to take a break and
Do something else.
Tomorrow I will do it again
For a different reason.
The same thing over and over,
Almost every day
Except for weekends.
I am comparing a typewriter to a train. Did you get it?
